If you have Google Ad$ense ads on your sites, this is hot...
Google shafts blogger, adds gagging clause to Adsense

"#17 Miscellaneous. Except as required by law, You may not, without Google's prior written consent, issue any press release or make any public statement about the subject matter of this Agreement or use or display any Google logo or trademark in any manner (except as otherwise provided to You by Google as part of an Ad Unit)."

No comment. Just giving you a link. Shut Up and Serve Ads

Will PR go down for linking to any site that discusses Ad$ense too?

More on designing with the user in mind...Digging Deeper into Search-friendly Design - Part II continues in High Rankings Advisor newsletter.

California cuts the crap...California Governor Signs Tough Anti-Spam Bill. "The new law outlaws unwanted e-mails sent from or to someone in California or through a server in the state. It also prohibits the collecting of e-mail addresses on the Internet in California for the purpose of advertising."

Is the Sun setting at Sun? ...Sun faces financial turmoil. "``The company has gone from being pure in vision and predictable in financial performance to an underachieving, bloated, unfocused reflection of its former self,'' Merrill Lynch analyst Steve Milunovich wrote in an ``open letter'' to Sun on Thursday."

Watch Jill Whalen test SEO stuff."It appears that Google does not index words in the link title attribute."

If you see scum, let us know at Cre8asiteForums, where we like to throw the stuff at the wall, publically. Your credit card has been charged for $234.65

It got really cold suddenly here in Eastern, Pennsylvania. This only made Dakota, my Golden Retriever puppy, even more energetic and looney. Watching a puppy run around the house at full speed is like watching the scene in the Superman movie where he's racing a train. I took Dakota to the park for a walk, where we both got some exercise and he could chase leaves and search for sticks. May you find something totally useless to do this weekend as well...

I still don't trust them. LookSmart launched its own Pay-Per-Click ad service today. Andy Beal covers it well in his blog, LookSmart launches Pay-Per-Click search service. LookSmart claims "Advertise your site on the LookSmart Network and reach 77% of US Web users." Note the word "US". Does this mean 77% of US Web users search via LookSmart? Really? Hummmm.

Special note to Kalena Jordan on blushing. It's those baby hormones! Secret note to Chris Ridings. Sorry. Couldn't resist more baby talk.

I'm a pain in the ass, aren't I?

Some usability finds:

Balancing visual and structural complexity in interaction design - How visual simplicity can harm usability by Henrik Olsen. I printed it out, 'cause it's long. It's a step or three past the usual usability stuff in that it offers some fresh food for thought. "Usability has become an important aspect of many web projects. For people with little experience in interaction design it's tempting to rely on what you see and what people tell you. Clients, co-worker, managers, and prospective users will want simplicity and will complain about information overload if your screens look crowded. But as we have seen, there is more between heaven and earth than meets the eye."

For my UK friends >>> Usabilitynews.com is targeted to you.

Website testing doesn't need to be expensive. Yes, it costs more to bring in the Human Factors folks and I'm a HF devotee because the work they do is so intriguing. But, if you just wanna know what's not working well or why online sales fizzled, affordable reviews are available at Site-Report.com There's many packages to choose from and services are not limited to websites. I help out at Site-Report.com and would love do some Internet software application usability/user interface testing for clients. It's where my interest and career in usability was born, after all.

Rant. In the US news a report came out saying kids don't have nearly as much homework as is thought or often complained about. They didn't survey my house! I spend an hour a day, minimum!, with my 4th grader. My 8th grader does most of hers in school because she plays Field Hockey and they have strict requirements for homework and grades for players. Her leftover homework is done in the evenings and I often don't see her unless she wants help studying for a test. The 5 year old has homework too, but thank goodness it's fairly easy stuff and the other kids like to help him. Yesterday I spent 2 hours with one kid on homework. They send home stuff that requires parent involvement. I even have to do math problems and SHOW MY WORK, like my son does! I didn't have this much homework when I was growing up. That study is crapola.

There's many ways to run a forums and many styles of moderating. It's not easy to be a moderator for Cre8asiteForums because there's no one leader. Sure, they call it "Kim's forums" but that's mostly a term of endearment. In fact, I'm not comfortable pushing my weight around and I hate power trips. My way of "leading" is to let everyone, moderators and guests, try stuff.

Sometimes a test is fun. Take Peabody, for example. Peabody is a little colored ball; birthed by two artists from Cre8asiteForums working on a new logo. Every once in awhile Peabody makes an appearance. When Peabody appears, it's a great time for playful people. One day, not long ago, our logo appeared squished and the guest who saw this inquired with a post. This spawned the telling of Logo looks squished (The Truth About Peabody)

It's nice to have something to talk about when news from the Usabilty and SEO worlds is slow. Everyone's talking about Kaltix and Google. Yawn.

Holy Zeus, gossip and rumors...Check out Peter's New blips on the radar, Oct 1 blog entry.

I'm sorta brain dead today, so I'll leave you with this scary thought for today:

"I will continue to stand up for what's right and to defend humans from overly complex technology." Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox, September 29, 2003:Alertbox #200

If you search the 'Net using Google a zillion times a day, and need to keep track of your excessive searching for some reason, Google offers Google Frequent Searches

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! to High Search Engine Ranking's Kalena Jordan, who writes the Search Engine News Blog
A day off is always a good thing!

Earn money with your brains >>> Trivial Pursuit online offers online games, and monetary prizes. We don't do that in MY house. (Offer money, that is.)

Have camera. Love town. Own blog. Brooklynkid.com is fun to look at it, even if you're not from NYC. Think anyone wants to see pics of my puppy?

FindWhat is just confusing me. Andy Beal digs up more of their dealings >>> Will the Espotting deal with FindWhat collapse?

I just have to have another look at the link.

Don't lie to me.
Contempt of Consumer: It's a Real Crime

Snips:

"More than 12 people a second signed up for the Federal Trade Commission's Do Not Call list on its first day. Consumers are voting with their pocketbooks, choosing to visit the retailers that treat them with respect, not avarice."

"We're making those people -- our customers -- angry. In our race to make as much money as possible (as fast as possible), we take time and resources and esteem and careers and use them up as fast as we can. We've lost sight of what it means to treat customers with respect. We also disrespect our shareholders, our employees, and our government -- but it's all part of the same problem."

Just in time for the holiday season. More shopping sites. More search engines to find gifts. Same big names. Amazon.com to Compete With Google's Froogle Comparison Shopping Engine

and

Yahoo! Launches New Comparison Shopping Search Engine

Job priorities. My friends at ABAKUS SEO Blog have discovered there's no "Pub" within 15 miles of Google headquarters. That's because here in the US, we go out to bars (although some places will call themselves a "Pub" just to be creative.)

Try Bars near Mountain View, CA

A list of SEO events can be located quickly on SEMPO's homepage.

No pressure or anything >>> New British Accessibility and Usability Pressure Group Launched - "The British Web Design and Marketing Association (BWDMA) has set up a working group for accessibility and usability. Professionals from both the blind and deaf communities have already joined, and the call has attracted members across the digital economy."

I can't get no. Sat. is. fac. tion. (I loved the DEVO version of that song!) The Relevance of Satisfaction comes from a "Conversion Rate Marketing Newsletter:
Persuading your Prospects to Take Action".
Might be something worth your while, eh?

An I try. An I try. An I try try try try try try. (Still singing the DEVO 80's verison of the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction")...

Do you ever have those "If the kids in High School could see me now?" moments? Me neither. But a link from someone who says nice things about your work is up there on my list of "Reasons For Keeping This Crap Up". See Chris Ridings' Chriseo Reviews Blogs. Thanks Chris!
