If the desirability trigger is lost due to confusing interface, then what?

A new idea for book searching by Whichbook.net is called "Brilliant" by one person, and he's right. Searching by mood IS often something I do when browsing in physical bookstores.

But, the website's interface made me feel dumb.

DRX of Design Crux presents the site in Cre8asiteForums >>> Desirability Interface Example.

Do you find it "desirable"?

Think online shopping is unsafe or for techno-geeks and lazy people? Think again! US Ecommerce To Hit $230 Billion - Forrester

"According to Forrester, it's about $230 billion. In its latest release, the researchers predict that while offline retail sales continue to struggle, online retail will grow at a steady 19% year-over-year growth rate, from $95.7 billion in 2003 to $229.9 billion in 2008. Most significantly, the report says, online retail sales will account for 10% of total US retail sales by 2008."

Bill's Blog of the Day is - Gleanings (Elegant Hack).

"If you build websites, but you really don't know too much about information architecture (IA), it can be interesting looking at how the organization of information on a website is perceived by Information Architects. Many of the articles on that page are great introductions to the field."

Further proof in the SEO pudding >>> Web marketing technique boosts Macomb tech firm

"Net Generation, based in Clinton Township, this year added "search engine optimization" to its Web development services after spending $600,000 in research trying to figure out how search engines work.

Through keyword recognization and other coding, search engine optimization helps companies target people who are looking for particular products on the Web instead of mass marketing to a general audience. The service has helped Net Generation more than double sales." (boldface is my reckless doing.)

We told you so!!!

Yes, but is it search engine friendly? In Defense of Fahrner Image Replacement argues a way for image creation via CSS while also supposedly causing a few gray hairs for usability/accessibility folks. And, maybe, SEO experts too.

"The demand for search engine optimization, or SEOs as they're known in the industry, is expected to grow, said Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Watch, a Web site devoted to the search engine industry." >>> Firms enlist specialists in search engine work

Rebel Yell! Seems Pandia couldn't decide if another SEO forum was a good idea or not. HighRankings Forum press

I no sooner decided to sign up for Jill Whalen's new SEO forum (See above link) when she PM'd me to say I was the lucky 400th subscriber! Now, the kicker is, I do usability reports for some of her clients and now she can see when I'm procrastinating and not really working! Hummmmm.....

Cre8pc office flooded...send Ark!

Days upon days of rain, and then a REALLY strange downpour yesterday, combined with some new fangled type of gutters the previous owner put on the house (which I just bought and moved into last month) led to a huge mess yesterday. I came home from picking up my kids from summer camp to find the new puppy and 3 cats watching the water rise in the basement.

My office was flooded and the family room and laundry room (the whole basement is a finished basement and made attractive for living in.) The sump pump couldn't handle the load and the new gutters couldn't route the water away fast enough. Water just poured into the house.

Family and neighbors were here until midnight last night helping us save everything. Even my pool overflowed!!! We're continuing to suck out the water and doing the fans, dehumidifiers, etc. stuff. Roads are closed around us too. It took Eric 4 different tries to get home when I called him to tell him the basement was flooded.

I've been offline and will be going back offline until this place is ok. We're expecting more thunderstorms today and every day until next week.

Soooo, yesterday was a wash out - ha ha.

Maybe a "real" blog entry tomorrow....

I won't tell the whole story but Saturday was quite a day. My daughter and I fell in love with a puppy who wasn't what I was looking for and wasn't where I wanted to get one, but the end of the story is that we now have "Coda", (or Dakota, as some of us are calling him). "Coda" is a Dakota (Sioux) Indian term for "Friend", or lifelong friend or friend like brother.

Coda is a male, 11 wk old dark Golden Retriever. He's a good boy, already sitting on command unless there's 149 other things of interest nearby.

The cats think I've totally lost my mind.

Even better news is after having an intruder on my property and my neighbor's property last Tues and Friday (Friday was a real man-hunt with lots of police officers here, fingerprints, etc.) the description my neighbor and I gave was right on the money. Turns out it was a step son who was here for the summer a few doors down and admitted to poking around because he was "bored". Now he gets to do community service and have a Juvenile record. Oh boy!

A new feature has been added to Cre8asiteForums' "Blog is Not Short For Bologna" forum. It's called Blog of the Day. Check it out! And drop Bill, Peter or myself your suggestions. Bill chose Eric Meyers' blog for the first one. Great choice!

There's a new title out there for folks who are user interface testers, got dumped into the Usability Professional bucket, and can't live with whatever title they presently have, called "Interaction Architect". AskTog writes in It's Time We Got Respect:

"We must have a single, universal name for our profession, regardless of whether we are doing the interaction design of a traditional computer application, a web site, or a computerized product, from an oven timer to a jet aircraft.."

I don't mind being a Interaction Architect. It sounds sexy!
