Blame it on my mouse.
Yesterday was a very stupid day. The main characters were my computer lab, wireless keyboard and mouse and slow SMTP server. Shoulda stayed in bed, which actually I did finally do, but I took my laptop with me. By late afternoon I figured out the problem with the wireless mouse and things got back to normal. Moral of the story? Don't even think to hire me as help desk staff.
The article series I'm writing for Jill Whalen's Advisor newsletter, Being Tops with Your Users and the Search Engines, (Part Two went out on Wednesday), talks about the basics of building and testing a website, from conception to launch to tracking its journey afterwards. One of the points I hope stands out is the need to be organized every step of the way. So, I was happy to see in today's Sitepoint newsletter, reference to a download for a Freelancer's Starter Kit. Among several things, it contains a web assessment form - something I highly recommend for getting your ducks in a row.
The Google tango has begun. I don't pay any attention to it. Rather, I watch everyone else get hysterical. See what I mean >>> "It is coming, it is coming, the dance is coming!!!"
I think Google waited to time their dance with the fall of Saddam's regime. But what do I know, really?

Does it ever occur to search firms that making enemies of search engine marketing folks is bad for business and PR?
What makes a blog a GREAT blog? Taking a stand on issues helps. One of my favorites is Peter DaVanzo's SearchEngineBlog. Alas, his views on the war have lost him a subscriber or two. Judging from his latest picture, he's devastated by this. Interestingly, in New Zealand, where Peter's from, he risks losing a few fans. In America, if you are in the public eye, say...the Dixie Chicks for example, and you speak out against the war, you get boo'd, bad press, and boycotted.
Yep. That's US Democracy for you.

Oh my gawd! Have you seen the new SearchEngineWatch web site? After a zillion years of the same bland look, feel and layout, the whole thing has been upgraded with a new design, layout, colors...GREAT to see and first glances are positive. Congratulations Danny Sullivan and his gang of SEO heros.
Google buys Blog software company. Google has a news site. Google says Blogs are not a source for news. There is a Google Weblog, but it's not associated officially with Google. I had granola for breakfast.
Just saw that Kalena Jordan of SearchEngineNewsBlog saw my column in Robert Clough's SearchEngineGuide.com web site, and my latest contribution to it. Yeah, every once in awhile I stop covering the news and actually try to make some. Sadly, though, the only thing that gets everyone riled up is when we discuss my Sex Goddess status. As if THAT's interesting...
Internet use cures Monday morning blahs...>>>Monday is the most popular day of the week to surf the web according to OneStat.com. I must be the only person in the world who works my ass off all day and if I'm lucky, am awake enough to surf at night.
And finally...>>> Not quite the cover of Rolling Stone.

It's Quote Day!
Marketing: "The responsibility for developing website traffic analysis fell to engineers who had different goals. For them, it was important to know that 78% of traffic is from Virginia and that 88% of visitors use Windows 98. They generate hundreds of reports that don’t help bring in cash." >>> Dear Marketer: Have you ever looked into the wrong end of a telescope?
Usability:
"Relevant user research results depend on two factors: First, obviously, you’ll need to find people who are likely to use the product. Second, you’ll need to interview enough of them so that trends emerge from their collective behavior. These trends will indicate your primary design targets." >>> Finding the Right Users
Pathetic:
"Overture Services has signed a three-year deal with Gator to display its sponsored search listings on pages that pop under those of rival and partner Web sites." (snip) "Like previous products from Gator, Search Scout allows advertisers to reach members of the Gator network when they are visiting competitors' sites--a feature that has already drawn lawsuits in the context of banner and pop-up advertising. Search Scout, launched in December, triggers a pop-under window when a Gator customer searches on a site such as Google or Yahoo. The window lists search results tied to keywords purchased through competing search services." >>> Gator snaps Overture for pop-under ads

As I write this, snow is falling here in Eastern, Pennsylvania. This is extremely rare...snow in Springtime. There's about 3" so far of the pretty white stuff and it's blowing around into small drifts.
Part one of my article, Being Tops with Your Users and the Search Engines has been added to my web site. Highranking.com's Advisor newsletter ran a shorter version of it. Now, you can view it in full.
Is it news you can use or marketing mumbo jumbo? Google News flips on the press release switch, and somebody isn't happy.
