Interview with Brett Tabke
If you don't know who he is, you don't eat web forums for breakfast like the rest of us do.
Not sure which man to flirt with more. The ever vocabulous Peter, of SearchEngineBlog or the ever vocabular Brett, of Webmasterworld. Both say clever things in their own creative ways. Peter cornered Brett for an interview, and there's more of that sorta good stuff to come! Get in line girls. I saw them first.
Read on. Brett Interview

Are we not men? We are DEVO.
Ok. So I'm showing my age. But that song is ringing in my head right now as I ponder what an SEO person is.
We are men and women who help websites come up in searches on the Internet. To do that, we've been accused of tricking, manipulating, and spamming search engines. Yep. Some search engine optimizers did just that. Please know they are the black sheep of the family. They need to be sent on a very long Outreach quest into the wilderness with no laptop or access to email and must leave all their porn site passwords at home too.
The rest of us who HELP web site owners do something entirely different, without the use of crummy stupid dog tricks that foul up search results and create havoc for engine software technology (i.e. algorithms). We teach web site owners how to enhance their web sites for both the user and the search portal so that both can find what they're looking for.
It's that simple. I'll repeat it.
We help users and search engines find what they are looking for. Our magical trick consists of building web pages that have a clear purpose, offer value, directly relate to what the user is looking for and is found by legitimate means via algorithms designed to find them quickly. We get our hands into the code itself, which means we must know how to read it and know how to structure it so that it performs well. Many of us are experienced programmers, user interface engineers, or marketing specialists who bring those skills to the table when you hire us.
We do try to read minds. We can't help it. There's a hundred ways to ask a question and we wish our clients' sites came up everytime you asked for it. But, unless some of us are new age SEO masters, we'll likely not know how everyone on the planet is going to search for something. Yes, I've seen some SEO aliens try some pretty crazy stunts to try and outwit engines. They give me a headache. They may be main reason search engines ended free submissions.
Now a song by the Talking Heads is in my head. Instead of "This is not my beautiful house! This is not my beautiful wife!" I hear Google saying "This is not by beautiful search engine!" or Yahoo! saying "This is not my beautiful new idea to drive more revenue!"
(The truest measure of a real SEO/SEM professional is that we listen to good music and think we sound great in the shower. You can find me under the keyword "bubbles".)
Competitive words are just too expensive these days and unless my site reaches a PR10 in just under 60 seconds upon submission, my time and money are better spent building a web site that users like and return to. Let's return to the days when the Internet was fun, shall we?

If You Own an Ecommerce Web Site - WATCH OUT!
I caught this via The Adventive Report where there's discussion going on about it...
Subject: Adventive Report, Issue 076: Evils of Ecommerce To: ADVENTIVE-REPORT@LIST.ADVENTIVE.COM
Overview - a company is suing ecommerce web site owners for using what they feel is patented technology - selling on the web. They're systematically targeting small businesses who in many cases don't have the money to fight back.
To read further:
http://www.informationweek.com/story/IWK20021020S0002/
"Small companies say they're being sued for employing common practices for doing business on the Net.
It also has opened the company to litigation. DeBrand is one of a growing list of businesses sued by a San Diego company that holds patents on basic E-commerce functionality. PanIP LLC has sued more than 50 companies in the last seven months, claiming that their E-commerce Web sites infringe its two U.S. patents. The patents, No. 5,576,951 and No. 6,289,319, cover, respectively, an "automated sales and services system," and an "automatic business and financial transaction-processing system."

Google - From Engine Saint to Engine Bully
All across the world are cries of "What the hell just happened to my PageRank?" The recent Google Dance has produced shock after shock as webmasters check to see how their website(s) faired after the latest round of indexing. Even web sites that belong to well known and reputable search engine marketing specialists have taken a hit, with one of them (that I'm aware of) having a slew of sudden penalized pages (PR0), for no obvious reason. Maybe.
Some possible reasons for punishment by the Google PR God are the following:
1. Use of Zeus reciprocal linking software (to which David Notestine must be having a fit over if this is in fact true since he tried so hard to get Google's blessing on his software.) 2. Use of ANY, (read that again), reciprocal link or ranking utility that bugs Google on a regular basis for rank or link checks. 3. Any outbound link from your site that goes to a PR0 page is potentially hazardous to the health of your own web site. This means you must constantly check all your outbound links (as if anyone has time for that). There's some discussion in the field that "bad" outbound links are balanced against the amount of "good" outbound links and the overall value of your web site. Why must we be forced to guess? Why all the dramatic emphasis on links, as if they were the only gauge of a site's worth? 4. Your site belongs to the SearchKing Network 5. Your site is linked to a site in the SearchKing Network 6. You committed any number of negative SEO tactics and were caught by Google or reported by someone (there ARE search engine police out there!) and your page/site was found guilty.
It's getting ugly out there. I'm very discouraged with Google because so much weight, unwarranted in my opinion, has been put into having a site that scores a high PR value. Actual business plan requirements factor in that score, recip linking is targeted to that score, rank and value are tied to that score and so on. Yet so many variables are out of our control, such as the destiny of any link we link to or who links to ours, or the reaction by Google, if any, to the software tools we may use to evaluate how a site or page is doing overall in searches.
And what about the people who don't put a Google Toolbar on their computer and therefore have no clue or interest in what a page's PR value is?
Perhaps a large B&M company with a web presence is unconcerned with all this Google hype, but a small or home business is not in a position to be jeapordized in this way. Stop for moment to consider the mom who wants to stay at home so badly to raise her kids, but can only afford to if she tries to start a little home based business via a web site. Her path is long and hard enough, and one mistake, such as trusting a company she may have networked with, or linking to a PR0 site could destroy her chances overnight (or after a Google Dance.)
Consider any mom and pop online shop that caters to your local area and provides excellent customer service but may not have the prettiest site, or the money to pay for pay per click, pay for rank or Google Ads. But they keep plugging away at it. Perhaps due to their lack of skills or small budget which doesn't cover web site consulting by someone who can keep them abreast of what NOT to do, they find themselves in a situation where their site is no longer in Google at all. Being in Google is now more vital than being in Yahoo!'s Directory.
Google is contributing to putting companies out of business. This isn't the forward-thinking type of company I thought Google wanted to be.
We discuss this in the Cre8asiteForums, if you'd like to join us - Google - From Engine Saint to Engine Bully

More Software with no Soul - They Just Never Learn
iWon Privacy Alert
Watch out for iWon's use of aornum.exe, which is a privacy intrusion added to their software. It doesn't leave your system on an install, nor does AdAware detect it.
The article goes into more detail.
