Google Tango
They call it the "Google Dance", but to me it's more like the Tango, with twirling and a hand on a hip at just the precise the moment.
What is the Google Dance?
From Google-Dance.com - "The 'Google Dance' is a very important time for SEO's because it can give them advanced clues as to how effective their optimization methods are for the Google search engine. If the optimization is not as they anticipated, SEO's can redesign their layout, content, linking strategies etc.. before the next crawl. If the these thing were not changed before the next crawl it can set SEO's back by up to 2 months, which in internet terms is a very long time."
You can watch the reindexing of www, www2 and www3 - the latter two assumed to be test servers, or what I would call "Staging" which is a precursor to "Production" and the final rollover. The Google Dance allows a glimpse into the rank of a your site as it will exist until after the next crawl.
Cre8asiteForums fans run to the dance floor at Cre8asiteForums as soon as it starts. You can join us! Grab a partner, or cling to the wall - we don't care. You can always learn by observing other people's experience with the Dance. We're tracking it here October Dance.
See you there!

Just Do It. Yourself
At long last I've put up a page on Cre8pc.com that offers something you don't have to pay me to do for you.
Web Site Rescue is now available in two forms. First, you can download a series of FREE checklists or review test sheets that will allow you to analyze your own web pages. Checklists offer a review to make sure you didn't forget anything, and may also inspire you to think of new things to add or try you hadn't thought of before. The test sheets offer a rating mechanism that allows you to determine what needs to be fixed immediately or can be postponed for a future release. You can track those releases and the identity of each tester. I'm offering basic documents for free, with more advanced, password protected usability tasks, search engine optimization testing and user testing being developed and made available for a fee in the coming months.
If you do want to pay a fee, I freelance as time permits (due to my regular consulting committments) in web site reviews. (see Fee Web Site Review Information) My approach is to keep it simple and provide a lot of data you can apply immediately without the need to analyze metrics and graphs or read large manual-size reports. I freelance in web site testing because I'm locked into project management/usability testing consulting contracts that require me to be on call 24-7. This means I stay off the phone to be available to them (and conference calls) but I'm free to freelance via email as much as I can handle.
My competitors, who do this full time with large staffs, charge between $100 and $640 per page for web site testing, whereas I give you the down and dirty at a mere $60/hr. You tell me how long to review and what your needs are. I target that. You stay within your budget. I get referrals from Highrankings.com and SearchSummit.com, if you'd like to contact people for references.
Two ways to Just Do It. Yourself. Or with me your side (email-side anyway!)

Watch Your Wallet.
I was forwarded an unsolicited email from a company that has one of the worst ideas I've ever seen.
Quote: "Guaranteed Listing in Yahoo! Directory for as low as $15"
The idea is to buy an expired domain for a commerical site that already exists (and paid the $299 fee) in Yahoo!'s directory. You buy the domain and because it already exists in Yahoo!, it's assumed you'll get traffic.
Now, what they don't tell you is that you don't get to change the description in Yahoo! to whatever you'll be using that domain for. (Unless of course you pay Yahoo!'s $299 fee.) Therefore, if a user clicks on it, they'll likely arrive at a website that has nothing whatsoever to do with the domain subject or what's listed for the site description.
Porn sites do this all the time. They call it a "redirect". So does this company.
I believe I remember Yahoo!'s policy states that each yearly renewal for a paid listing involves them checking to make sure the site is still meeting their criteria and that it still matches the description, etc. This would make the scam fall apart, if true. It won't do anything for those sites that were "grandfathered" into the Directory before the December cutoff which required an annual renewal from that point on.
This means that any expired domain that's sold and the subject matter of the site is changed, but not updated in Yahoo!'s Directory, is a user nightmare and reflects poorly on Yahoo! search results.
This is the first time I've seen the value of Yahoo!'s annual renewal process. It would alleviate stupid ideas like what that company is doing.

SEO BETA TESTERS WANTED
For immediate release For more information: Amy Hooker, maven communications for ClickTracks 910-362-8004 • 910-362-8005 (fax) • info@mavencom.com
CLICKTRACKS ISSUES CALL FOR SEO BETA TESTERS Test to Validate Search Engine Optimization Features in Web Metrics Software
SUNNYVALE, CA — October 29, 2002 ClickTracks, Inc., makers of web metrics software ClickTracks Analyzer (www.clicktracks.com), today announced that companies and consultants are being sought to participate in the beta test of ClickTracks Analyzer v. 3.0. Companies and individuals selected to participate in this beta test must meet the following prerequisites:
1. Companies or individuals must be actively engaged in Search Engine Optimization. 2. Must be available to test the software anytime during the period of October 30 through November 7, 2002 Qualified companies who meet these requirements and are interested in participating in the ClickTracks Analyzer beta test should contact ClickTracks at 877-773-2249 or via e-mail at beta@clicktracks.com to get started using the ClickTracks Analyzer software.
"We're excited to begin beta testing our newest version with the SEO community," said John Marshall, CEO of ClickTracks. "Currently, ClickTracks Analyzer offers several tools that are well suited for this industry, including the ability to easily 'tag' groups of visitors with a common characteristic—whether it be a common referrer or keyword search—and compare and contrast those groups. Additionally, we will be gathering feedback from beta test participants on options and features they'd like to see in the next version of ClickTracks, whether it be the ability to set 'goal' pages or another way to measure the return on investment of their optimization campaigns."
ClickTracks Analyzer is a program that allows web designers, SEO consultants, web marketers and others to visually examine how visitors are interacting with their site. The software superimposes visitor data on top of the actual website, offering a completely intuitive, easy-to-understand view of site activity.
Unlike other site metrics software, ClickTracks doesn't subscribe to the 'bury-you-with-data' philosophy, and as a result, doesn't include superfluous statistics, such as 404 errors. By putting information in context, rather than simply supplying it in a pretty 3D pie chart, ClickTracks allows users to quickly and easily see relevant, actionable information. ###
