Who Can We Blame?

Is Google Being Unscrupulous? (click here)

When SearchKing/PR Ad Network's Bob Massa began selling text ads on its network with prices based on Google PageRank, all hell broke loose.
To make matters worse, the last Google Dance showed that every site in the PR Ad Network had been assigned a PR0, a sign that Google had penalized them.
Since Bob didn't inform his network he was going to try a new marketing strategy before he did it, the web site owners in his Network had no choice but to go down the tubes with him.

Did Google throw pie at Bob and his Network of sites? Could any of this have been worked out peacefully without the need to hurt the reputation of a hundreds of web sites?
When Google policy states their Toolbar can not be used for commerical purposes, does this mean no SEO professional can use it for work on their client sites, and to help them judge a client's competition?

What, exactly, is going on here and why isn't Google talking about it?

This is a hot thread. What do you think? Would you link to Bob or any of his Network sites now?

But is it really Wiser?

Nobody could figure out why LookSmart, a directory, purchased Wisenut, the crawler based engine that was once claimed to be a Google rival and then dropped off the face of the planet. But, apparently it's been quietly re-launched, and it's reps claim it will still rival Google in producing accurate search results.

"We spend more time judging quality of each link than some of the other engines do," said Peter Adams, LookSmart's Chief Technology Officer. "We spend a lot of time not just counting quantity but also looking at the quality based on the context of the connections."

Also factored in are link analysis, proximity of search terms in underlying documents, and computing results in real time based on your specific query.

LS plans to refresh Wisenut's database every 30 days. Like Google, it simply crawls the web looking for pages. No need to submit to it. Just be on the Internet.

Alta Vista caught with its pants down

Blamed as a miscommunication and poor sales personnel training, Alta Vista scrambled to explain why one of its salespersons told a well known web marketing consultant that paying for inclusion would help a site rank higher than free submissions - a claim which goes against everything AV has been saying thus far.

Turns out he was mistaken, and got AV into some hot water. Never tell someone who knows how search engines work something that just ain't so because web marketers are paid to know the facts and will turn over every stone to get the truth. Their clients depend on it.

CNET wrote a great article on what happened...click on Is AltaVista searching for top dollar?

No more meta tag nightmares!
For years I've tossed and turned at night, worried I didn't get JUST THE RIGHT keywords right for a client's meta keywords tag.

Now, as many of you smarter SEO-interested people know, that tag has been pushed aside in lieu of links, popularity and heaven forbid, designing a QUALITY web site in the first place. Danny Sullivan and Traffick.com's Andrew Goodman declared the Meta Keywords officially "Dead" in this report.
