Warmest Greetings,
Not Your Basic Web Designer Guidelines
:: Wednesday, June 16, 2004 ::
Graphics and accessibility are two areas that sooner or later, someone needs guidance with. Here goes, in a rather quickie blog entry today:
The Business Benefits of Designing for Usability
There are links in this piece and good information to tuck under your hat, plus:
"180 million people worldwide have a visual impairment.
40-45 million persons are blind.
90% of the world's blind population live in developing countries.
Approximately 50% of the world's blindness is the result of cataracts.
China accounts for about 18% of the world's blind population.
As a designer, you could look at this information as backup for talking to your company about changes to designs, especially if said company wants to work in emerging markets. Most companies without designers who understand (or care about) accessibility issues will be leaving certain aspects of targeted markets untapped."
And, from Cre8tive Flow,
Broadening Comprehension When Designing Pages, written by Bill Slawski.
"The set of six guidelines for how and when to use graphics on your web site are worth thinking about."
Keep your eye out for more issues of Successful Sites. I'm writing two articles for this ezine - one on Contact form guidelines and another on newsletter subscription guidelines. Subscriptions are free!
On a personal note
My 12 year old son hit his fourth, out of the ball field and over the fence, Homerun shot last night. He's been picked for the Division team and Travel team, which they tell me means he's on his way to the Major Leagues.
Can you believe I got all teary eyed when I saw that ball go sailing up and away so far? The whole ball park (both teams, parents and coaches) were screaming and yelling while Stefan just calmly trotted around the bases, with this sweet grin on his freckled face.
His Dad and his almost-step-Dad hunted down that ball together and added it to his collection of homerun baseballs, all dated and ready for future story telling.
It was a good day, yesterday.
