Warmest Greetings,
:: Wednesday, September 24, 2003 ::
I knew if I complained publically in my Blog, Comcast would fix the problem with seeing websites with Google Ads in the Philadelphia area. At around 3pm or so they sputtered back into existence and I can now view all the websites I visit every day that host Google AdSense ads. I wrote and thanked my cable provider for fixing it and this is what they said,
"Dear Ms. Krause, Thank you for letting us know you were able to resolve the issue."
*I* didn't resolve it, but it's nice to know they think I fixed it for them.
Serif-thingys and leaning close to flowers >>> Choosing the right font and font size...
If you visit DMOZ, expect weird things to happen >>> DMOZ access errors?. Cre8asiteForums moderators report errors. Jean says it's growing pains.
56k is still the majority Internet speed in the US. This means you still need to test web pages using dial-up. Don't assume everyone is waiting patiently to see your cool stuff. See >>>September 2003 Bandwidth Report . Keep in mind that most high-speed access is available at work, meaning casual surfing at home, games, entertainment and school projects are more likely done at slower speeds.
Digitalmag.com has some new stuff. I LOVE that website. See Jeff Lash's Soft Skills for Information Architecture. He writes,
"As an information architect, you will occasionally need to put your foot down. A large part of the IA role is convincing others that your recommendations are sound and should be followed, or persuading others that IA is important and you should be allowed to perform your duties."
Today's idiot prize goes to www.searchenginwatch.com. Notice it's mis-spelled, missing the "e" in the word engine. Omegafind.com bought the domain and uses it for their own purposes. And they call themselves "clean, genuine search". Stealing someone's brand to sell you own stuff isn't clean or genuine.
I didn't see the answer to the question in this article >>>How Can Google's Gold Be Inktomi's Spam? but it does a nice job of blasting link farm networks. So. Is Google rewarding them or what?
If you haven't seen it yet, Andy Beal has a great SEO blog >>> SearchEngineLowdown.com. Watch how you spell that thing.
Here's another example of why spam email should be outlawed and the sender's prosecuted.
Here's how the email goes:
Subject: You credit card has been charged for $234.65
Body:
Important notice
We have just charged your credit card for money laundry service in amount of $234.65 (because you are either child pornography webmaster or deal with dirty money, which require us to layndry them and then send to your checking account). If you feel this transaction was made by our mistake, please press "No". If you confirm this transaction, please press "Yes" and fill in the form below.
Enter your credit card number here: [ pretend this is a form field ]
Enter your credit card expiration date: [ pretend this is a form field ]
[ YES ] [ NO ]
The "form" is an email. It doesn't ask for the type of card or the cardholder name. The email writer can't spell and uses fear to get a response. Feel free to use the spam and scam resources here to fight back.
Now we know there's no QA Department at Apple >>> Apple pulls 10.2.8 update; cites Ethernet problem. One day after launch, "Some Mac users complained that their Ethernet networking connectivity was deactivated following the software update's installation."
