Alta Vista caught with its pants down
Blamed as a miscommunication and poor sales personnel training, Alta Vista scrambled to explain why one of its salespersons told a well known web marketing consultant that paying for inclusion would help a site rank higher than free submissions - a claim which goes against everything AV has been saying thus far.
Turns out he was mistaken, and got AV into some hot water. Never tell someone who knows how search engines work something that just ain't so because web marketers are paid to know the facts and will turn over every stone to get the truth. Their clients depend on it.
CNET wrote a great article on what happened...click on Is AltaVista searching for top dollar?
